An Evening with the Gurruwiwi’s

July 14 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

You’re invited to a special evening celebrating Indigenous Australian culture through film and music hosted by Morning Star Documentary

Enjoy a screening of the documentary Westwind: Djalu’s Legacy, a Q&A with director Ben Strunin, and stars Larry, Vernon & Jason Gurruwiwi. and a traditional songline performance by the band Larry Gurruwiwi Malawurr.

About Westwind: Djalu’s Legacy

Djalu Gurruwiwi, an ageing Yolngu elder and master Yidaki (didgeridoo) player, is a custodian of his people’s ancient songlines that have stored his clan’s knowledge, culture and country since the birth of time. But Djalu is running out of time to pass on these songlines, entrusted to him for the future of his people. His sons and community, struggling to come to terms with the consequences of colonisation, are lost. When Djalu breaks with tradition in an effort to save the songlines, world-famous musician Gotye becomes an unexpected family member and helps amplify the songs to the world.

About Larry Gurruwiwi Malawurr

Larry Gurruwiwi and his brothers Vernon & Jason, hail from North East Arnhem Land, Australia and form the band Malawurr. Together they perform ancient Galpu clan songlines (Manikay) and dance ceremonies (Bunggul) carrying thousands of years of stories, tradition and vital knowledge that is deeply connected to the sacred land they live on. Larry and his brothers have performed together since childhood, inspired by their father Djalu and many generations of ancestors who have passed down the songlines for over 60,000 years. As custodians, they are now responsible for sharing the traditions with future generations.
