Operations Manager

1 year contract October 2021 to September 2022 with option to renew.

Salary               £25,000 PR, this post represents 0.8 (35 hours full time)

Small World Theatre (SWT) is a performing theatre company and community arts organisation based in a near zero-carbon accessible building in Cardigan, West Wales. SWT has extensive experience producing and performing large-scale puppet theatre and in delivering innovative educational and community arts projects. Current core projects include Syrcas Byd Bychan (SBB) (aerial circus training) and Amethyst (young people and mental health). Small World Theatre is a company limited by guarantee and a Registered Charity.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Manage the organisation and report to the Board of Trustees (you will be mentored by the current Exec Director for a transitional period where needed). You will attend quarterly Board meetings and provide a written report.
  • Implement strategic development plans as agreed with trustees and senior staff
  • Provide excellent management across the organisation, including overseeing both financial administration and project management for all projects.
  • Develop new projects in line with company ethos and ensure funding and appropriate staffing is in place to deliver them.
  • You will be working alongside the Creative Team and the Communications Manager to ensure smooth communication and running of operations, including overseeing delivery of a programme of live events in Theatr Byd Bychan (ThBB) when covid-19 restrictions ease.
  • Ensure the building is maintained and all statutory obligations are observed and kept up to date and compliant, including with Government bodies (eg HMRC, Companies House, Charity Commission), H+S, covid-19 security, fire safety, food safety and insurance.
  • You will be required to manage the admin and maintenance staff as well as some freelance artists who are working on projects.

Skills & Experience

We are a small team of creative people, and we want to work with individuals with a passion for the arts and community.

  • Fluency in Welsh (both written and spoken) is highly desirable for this post.
  • A good working knowledge of health and safety legislation and its obligations and risk assessments.
  • Evidence of working strategically to develop and grow businesses.
  • Excellent written interpersonal and team-working skills.
  • Financial management (payroll, bookkeeping, fundraising and experience of reporting to funders).
  • Experience of line managing staff.
  • The organisation uses MAC computers. You will be proficient in Microsoft Office and experience of using project management software is desirable.
  • Ability to work in a diverse, creative environment; ensuring all contributions are valued
  • Experience of writing successful funding applications.
  • Interest in the theatre and the arts (desirable).
