Resilience and Well-being Sessions

June 7 @ 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Skills, Support & Recovery for Stress & Emotional Distress. Well-being West Wales Support Service is providing a specialist community-based support service to help empower adults to recover from adverse life events at Small World Theatre from January 2020.

This new service is delivered by senior mental health consultant Rachel Parker. She will provide one-to-one therapeutic sessions to promote each person’s resilience and well-being. This specialist service is designed to support adults who now want to focus on their own well-being needs, who are experiencing stress, emotional distress and want to learn new coping strategies.

Therapeutic sessions are a safe and nurturing space for each person to address the negative consequences of adverse life events, finding resilience and recovery. Each person can practise and learn a range of new skills within a caring, supportive and empathetic therapeutic relationship that is always fully focused upon each person’s individual needs and recovery. In this way each person can gain back mastery and control of their lives, have more positive outcomes, move safely beyond their adverse life experiences into growth and new development, and can flourish.

Adverse life events (including Adverse Childhood Experiences) can create long term negative consequences on our emotions, feelings and behaviours, impacting our current well-being. Some of the symptoms of stress and emotional distress stemming from these include: not being able to concentrate; problems sleeping; constant worrying; avoiding specific situations; being critical of yourself; having strong emotions that feel overwhelming; not being able to relax or “switch off”; finding it difficult to trust yourself or others; hypervigilance; restricting positive life activities due to fears, worries or anxieties; undermining yourself; emotional pain; feelings of rejection and worthlessness; low self-esteem; negative self-talk and hopelessness.

Adverse Childhood Experiences are traumatic experiences that occur before the age of 18 and that are remembered throughout adulthood. A Public Health Wales NHS Trust Survey (2015) has revealed that one in every seven adults aged 18-69 years in Wales has experienced four or more Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) during their childhood. Also that just under half of adults have experienced at least one. This unfortunately means that ACEs are common experiences.

This new outreach service aims to widen access to specialist support for resilience and recovery from adverse life experiences, to support the well-being of the local community.
