Making a Difference Engine

outdoor, environmental theatre, immersive puppetry, animation, multi-arts

Small World Theatre designed and created an interactive puppet theatre performance to respond to #climatecrisis. We got so far and then CV-19 struck and our project, rehearsals and a tour of Wales had to be postponed. We are sharing the original proposal on this page with work in progress, while we revisit the project. Our plans for an alternative delivery during during CV-19 restrictions will be posted to the page. Work will resume the project in the Autumn.
June 2021.

The original performance

Join a trio of timeless travellers seeking solutions as they whizz, clang and turn the handle on questions of biodiversity with their Making a Difference Engine. This extraordinary mechanism uses vintage technology, puppets and automata to take a dramatic look at where we are, where we were and where we may get in the future.

Expect to be engaged in inspiring stories and archaic mayhem as three troubadours take you on a quest to unravel the secret of the ‘interconnectedness of everything’. On their turbulent journey through right and wrong turns, species lost and found, they are hoping in this particular place and time that you will be able to help.

About the project

Developed with partners across Wales the story adapts to specific locations, offers families opportunities to interact with the engine, encouraging them to value and protect our unique biodiversity. Touring Wales in 2020 supported by the Arts Council of Wales.

Original partners:
Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Volcano Theatre, Oriel y Parc, St Davids, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, National Eisteddfod, RSPB Ynys-hir Nature Reserve, Green Man Festival, Oriel Davies, Elan Valley, Venue Cymru in partnership with Wales Coast Path, North Wales Wildlife Trust

Making a Difference Engine is a new piece of environmental theatre aimed to heighten audience awareness of environmental sustainability at ten locations in Wales. This site-specific, outdoor production can be adapted to appear inside a venue without being compromised. It is a multi-arts experience including elements of puppetry, animation and soundscapes with plenty of audience participation opportunities and interaction with the engine.
